I was recently delighted with a special surprise evening. For our 20-year wedding anniversary, my husband insisted on planning a "Johnny Walker Surprise" that was not revealed to me until we reached the destination. (Yes, my husband's name really is Johnny Walker).

"A surprise? But, I don't like surprises," I replied. I say that, often, yet I have never actually encountered a surprise of his that I didn't like.

Unshaken by the great San Francisco earthquake and Prohibition, SIMI Winery is proudly celebrating 140 years. The winery was founded in 1876 by Italian brothers, Giuseppe and Pietro Simi, who immigrated to California from Tuscany during the Gold Rush. Instead of finding gold, they founded SIMI, making it one of the longest continually operating wineries in Sonoma County.

Rick Moshin, a former San Jose State University math instructor, made prudent use of his math skills to design a four-tier gravity flow winery for small-lot wine production at Moshin Vineyards. In 1989, he and his family purchased a small Pinot Noir vineyard, and this year, they observe a significant milestone: the family’s 25th anniversary of wine growing.
