3 Steps to Prepare You for Nearing Retirement

If looking ahead to retirement makes you a little nervous, you’re not alone.

Only about half of Americans (51 percent) who haven’t reached retirement predict that they will be financially comfortable once they get there, according to a Gallup survey.

For some, those potentially uncomfortable retirement years are decades away. But for the Baby Boom generation, retirement either already arrived or will in the next decade or so, prompting many Boomers to wonder whether they are prepared for their looming date with destiny.

Are You and Your Spouse Financially Compatible?

And… they lived happily ever after. This is true in fairy tales, but in real life, many marriages end on a different note. The fact of the matter is many times, couples find financial disparity in their relationship, do not deal with it directly, and begin to see problems arise. Regardless of the issue, differences must be realized and discussed up front, before the financial bottom falls out.

Considering that financial problems are cited as a leading cause of divorce, it is vital to make sure you and your partner are on the same financial page. By speaking openly and honestly about finances, couples can manage their differences and find their way to compatibility.

Daughter-in-Law Acting Disrespectful

My son and daughter-in-law have been married for four years. I have tried so very hard to love her the way my son loves her. There is obviously something wonderful in her because he is a wonderful son. We have helped them financially more than we should—I've bought the baby bed, items to fix the room, many other baby items and my mother has set the date for a shower. For Christmas, we gave them a large screen TV, forgave a $1,200 loan, etc. and I wonder if that has caused them to take advantage of us.

Become Financially Independent from Parents

Do you live with your parents or in-laws? Do you work for them? Do you owe them money? Do they provide daycare for your children? Do you depend on them for transportation?

Many couples, especially newlyweds, sometimes lean on their folks for financial support, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, it could be a bad thing if (1) your parents or in-laws are controlling, manipulative people, (2) you feel obligated to do everything they want because they take care of your monetary needs, or (3) your spouse feels financially trapped by them. Unite with your spouse to identify problem areas, reach loving compromises, focus on mutual goals, and brainstorm ways to achieve those goals—even if they seem unattainable.
