Fear has prevented me from living true to myself and from taking prudent risks. But fear is a broad catchall for other negative emotions. Fear is based on future outcomes that, in most cases, do not occur. We tend to separate emotions of anger, hate, jealousy, betrayal, resentment, sadness, hurt, and discontent from fear. Yet, all are tentacles of the same root cause: fear.

Even though plenty has changed since the days we, the parents, were entering the job market, the important things haven’t. The fundamentals of hard work, integrity, respect, perseverance, and so forth still lead to success—so when advising your child, feel free to draw on your own experiences.

Make a point to have a conversation about the lessons you think he or she most needs to take to heart—perhaps over a celebratory dinner or while packing up their dorm room. Most of all, help your child to understand that when you live and work by a code that’s shaped by values, integrity, dedication, and a true team spirit, you will set yourself apart from the other rookies in a way that gets you hired, recognized, and promoted.

A recent study has revealed that we are 70 percent more likely to spread false news on Twitter, according to Laboratory for Social Machines (LSM) at the MIT Media Lab. In all categories, falsehoods diffused signifi­cantly farther, faster, and deeper than the truth. True stories take about six times as long to reach the same number of people as do false ones. While the effect was most pronounced for false political news, it also included terrorism, natural disasters, science, urban legends and finan­cial information.
