When most think of California wine, they immediately think of Napa Valley. Napa wines are amazing, sure, but so are the wines throughout the rest of the state. Here's one Napa winery and two from other parts of the Golden State.

Nestled an hour east of San Francisco, the Livermore Valley is one of California’s oldest wine growing regions. Surrounded by lush vineyards, picturesque hills and quaint suburbs, the Livermore Valley has a rich history of wine making. Fifth generation winemakers, new winemakers and vineyardists all work in unison to usher the Livermore wine region into a new era of wine renaissance.

Although he grew up in a family that has been making wine for six generations, it wasn’t until 1996 that Steven Kent Mirassou brought his love of great Cabernet Sauvignon to the Livermore Valley and started The Steven Kent Winery, with the singular focus of crafting the very best possible Bordeaux wines.

Actually, Cabernet was anything but new to the Livermore Valley; it had grown there successfully since the late 1800s. But, inspired by the climate and soils of Livermore Valley, Steven wanted to raise the bar. And he did.

Sometimes, it’s ok to leave your heart in San Francisco: especially when you’re following your senses eastward. There, just about 30 miles as the crow flies, three stunning valleys (Amador, Livermore, and San Ramon) converge to form what has come to be known as Tri-Valley, California. This picturesque region cradles the cities of Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, and San Ramon, the town of Danville, and the vineyards of Livermore Valley wine country. It has also become a hotbed for all kinds of sensory exploration.

In its brief history, Cuda Ridge Wines has certainly kept its pedal to the metal. Now set in a vineyard of young Petit Verdot in the heart of Livermore Valley, California, wine country, the winery was officially founded in 2007 by Margie and Larry Dino. They produced their initial vintage of 300 cases in 2007 in a leased garage. In 2009, they moved to accommodate an increased production of 800 cases and opened a tasting room, and in 2013, they moved to Arroyo Road, a prime Livermore location.

It’s surprising to many first-time visitors how an area so close to the city of San Francisco can manage to maintain its small community charm. Tri-Valley has five unique small cities (Danville, Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, and San Ramon) and plenty of wonderful places in between just bursting with opportunities for recreation and entertainment. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking and horseback riding in Sunol, swimming and fishing at Shadow Cliffs, and camping at Del Valle.
