In this age of early sexualization, lookism, perfectionism, and materialism, it’s easy to worry about how our daughters can stand up to all the unhealthy messages and conditioning rampant in the culture. There are four types of girls that seem to cause us to lay awake at night the most, so let’s meet them and see if we can reframe how we look at them.

1. My daughter is so sweet, naive, and innocent that I am afraid she will be eaten alive in middle school and beyond.

Sexual dissatisfaction is one of the top reasons cited when we leave our relationships. It is also one of this life’s most worthy challenges to take on; not only for the meaning and pleasure it can bring to our marriages, but also for the very real health benefits that a satisfying sex life bestows on our well-being. I also believe that learning how to satisfy our sex drive and grow our comfort with our erotic selves is a window, which reveals our deepest humanity.

As parents we’re overstressed and sleep-deprived, strung out from juggling the demands of job and home, and teetering on the edge of sanity as we deal with our children’s worst behavior—toddler meltdowns, fights over the video game controller, texting at the dinner table and so on.

Should you, or should you not allow your high school senior daughter to go on an unsupervised spring break trip with her friends? I unequivocally vote no, and here are my reasons why—and you can blame me if your daughter throws a fit.

Adolescents are not developmentally ready to handle the temptations and situations that occur at spring break gatherings. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) of the teenage brain, the executive center, is not fully developed in females until 18-19 years of age, and for males it’s early to mid 20’s.
