Does the idea of being Supermom excite you? It’s a title that many mothers wear with great pride. Still, others grow weary of being referred to that way. When we think of the history of the title Supermom, we know that it originates with Superman. Here’s an important thing to remember: Superman wore a costume. Clark Kent was only referred to as Superman once the suit and glasses were replaced with the famous "S" and a cape. But many times, mothers are expected to be Supermom at all times and expected to view it as a compliment.

I beg to differ. I think the title itself can be damaging to women who are already attempting to do "all the things" while putting themselves on the back burner, if they are on the stove at all.

When I was writing my first book, Father to Daughter, Life Lessons on Raising a Girl, there were a number of questions from dads expressing frustration with their wives about raising children. Over the years, I’ve had a chance to talk to hundreds and hundreds of dads and generally all have said the same thing. We’re either all married to the same woman, or women tend to think alike. So, as my gift to mothers everywhere, here’s a short explanation on being a dad.

What the Research Says

Research from the University of Pennsylvania show that there has been a shift in happiness since the 1970s, when women claimed to be happier than men. One of the studies explains that since the 1960s, men have cut back on unpleasant activities and relax more.

What do parents fight more about than sex or money? Ask any parent: It’s how to raise their children. The dilemma is that while both parents love their children, while they may even have agreed beforehand how to raise their children, and while they may have read every parenting book ever published since 1950, nobody really knows what kind of parent they’re going to be until they are actually confronted with a smiling, gurgling baby; or a thirteen-year-old daughter who is demanding a $1,700 Burberry purse; or a fifteen-year-old son who, at 2 a.m., is standing intoxicated at the front door… with a police officer.

For the most part, mothers across the globe have just one day dedicated solely to their hard work: Mother’s Day. I have to tell you I am not big on these one-day wonders. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the focused attention, but I think we should give honor to mothers every day. We should also honor ourselves by creating and maintaining a balanced life, the real meaning of why we celebrate special days like Father’s Day and Mother’s Day in general.

Mothers are a very important figure in a son’s life. A mother and son bond are established after birth where the child depends physically and emotionally on their mother. Research suggests that when boys have a strong emotional bond with their mothers they are better in school, relationships and the workplace. They also have lower rates of anxiety and depression. So, is the bond still strong after he gets married?

Women who are at least 35 years old when they give birth are much more likely than younger mothers to experience a variety of major pregnancy complications, a recent study confirms.

While previous research has linked what’s known as advanced maternal age to problems like high blood pressure and diabetes during pregnancy and a higher risk of death and severe complications for babies, the current study offers fresh insight into the severe health issues faced by older mothers, said lead study author Dr. Sarka Lisonkova.
