New Year’s Resolutions to Strengthen Your Marriage

Every year, we make them. Every year, we break some—maybe all of them. Workout more, eat better, spend less money, those are the most common ones. And while self-care and self-improvement are certainly worthwhile goals, there’s one area that many people overlook when it comes to New Year’s resolutions: their marriage.

Resolving to improve certain areas of a marriage is just as important as resolving to be physically healthier or eat better.

New Year’s Resolution Tips that Really Work

It’s that time of the year where we set our good intentions for creating lasting New Year’s resolutions. Maybe you want to stop smoking, get out of a bad relationship, lose weight, or quit a dead-end job.

But why is it that New Year’s resolutions generally don’t work? Because they come from your head and not from your heart. What does that mean? Willing something to happen never works. Unless your internal message is loud and clear you're not going to respond with any real, effective behavior changes. And in order to facilitate change, the pain you’re suffering has to be greater than the pain of change.

Resolution for Two

You hop into the new year by sharing a bottle of bubbly and a smooch from your partner, but your resolutions will probably focus on you, you and you. You want to lose weight, get a promotion and make more money. But what about that other entity in your life—your marriage? We challenge you to make 2008 the best year yet for your union by taking your partner into consideration and making a resolution that’ll benefit both of you.

Don’t know where to start? We’ve got 10 experts who can help you get the gears turning.
