Making the Perfect Vegetarian Salad

A large plate bursting with colorful plants and topped with a zingy vinaigrette—a big salad—has been part of my regular dinner repertoire for years. Happily, this concept is finally getting the love it deserves as a result of today's increased focus on plant-based diets. Forget the naked salads of the 1980s, cruelly deprived of dressing. Follow these five tips and get creative to make salad the star of tonight's supper.

Date Night: Wine Party for Two

As a couple, you want all of the romance, but none of the stress. Wine, cuddling and conversations of the future make for a night to remember. If you want to make your night at home something a little fun, demonstrating a bit of effort without forcing the night, try creating your own wine pairing party. Use this as a jumping off point for a romantic evening for two.

Set The Mood

One reason that wine and romance go together is that they both require the same balance of seriousness and fun, never being demanding nor frivolous.

The Basics of Cooking With Pork

Pork earned the nickname as the "other white meat" because producers learned to create pork products that are as low in fat as some cuts of chicken. Lean cuts of pork are a good source of protein and essential nutrients. Just as you would do with beef, the key is to go lean and pay attention to portion sizes. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture MyPlate Guidelines, for daily protein intake, most adults should eat about 5 to 6.5 ounces of protein each day. The serving size of protein for an adult should average about 3.5 ounces, which is about the size of a deck of cards. The bottom line is to keep it lean, and eat small portions. Select fruit sauces as toppings and vegetable dishes for sides.

Awesome Almonds

Almonds have been around for a long time. They are mentioned in the Bible, and were a prized ingredient in breads served to Egyptian pharaohs. It is believed that almonds originated China and Central Asia. Early explorers traveling the Silk Road between Asia and the Mediterranean snacked on almonds. Before long, almond trees flourished in the Mediterranean, especially in Spain and Italy.

In the mid-1700's, the almond tree arrived in California from Spain, compliments of the Franciscan Friars. Today, California is the only place in North America where almonds are grown commercially.

Rev Up Your Metabolism with Whey

I love whey protein because it’s quickly absorbed by the body and gives you antioxidant protection. You can easily add it to your diet by mixing whey protein powder into smoothies, cereal, juice or water. It is an instant, high-quality protein that you don’t have to cook—that’s my kind of food. Plus, whey protein tastes good. Just be careful when choosing your whey powder. Read the label to make sure that it has virtually no fat, contains whey protein isolates (which are absorbed faster than other forms) and is microfiltered—a method that keeps the proteins intact.

Because whey is digested quickly, it allows the amino acids to repair the muscles that are building lean muscle mass. Try a whey protein smoothie
