When Lady Gaga recently told her fans that kindness—not wealth and fame—is what creates harmony in the world she may have been on to something. Research has shown that being kind makes us happier and also is contagious, inspiring others to be kind as well. For example, one such study published in the Journal of Social Psychology linked performing acts of kindness to an increase in life satisfaction.

That’s why as people make their resolutions for the coming New Year, they should make up their minds to commit purposeful acts of kindness every day.

In addition to everything else you may be dealing with as a military spouse, you are bound to hear a few unintentionally thoughtless comments that will leave you wondering how to respond.

Any military spouse can probably recite a list of the tactless comments they’ve heard when their spouse has been deployed, from "compliments" that sting to doom-and-gloom rants from others that fan the flames of worry.

While family and friends may be grasping for the right words to say, when feeling nervous they may chatter on and make a difficult situation worse.

It’s inevitable: if you interact with other human beings, you’re going to be subject to an assortment of slights, glares and smirks (if not downright rude gestures). Whether their behavior is intentional or not, the driver that cuts you off, the person in front of you in the "15 items only" line with 25 items in their cart, the sales person who refuses to make eye contact as they text away on their phone—are all annoying.
