This is, after all, the time of year that new growth begins to take root. Yet, as much as nature takes charge to "do its thing," a skilled gardener knows that a top-notch garden is carefully cultivated and well-tended. Although we might get a gorgeous crop of tomatoes or a massive load of zucchini now and again as a result of sunny skies and a dose of good luck, we also realize that skill, patience, and dedicated effort bring about the most wondrous and consistent results.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that more than 60 percent of our children do not eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables they need. Gardening is an excellent way to encourage and increase your child’s consumption of these vitamin-rich foods.

Gardening is fun, plain and simple. The process involves dirt, water and digging; it yields hours of fun; a lifetime of memories; and most importantly, fresh and tasty treats that nourish growing bodies—so much more than just plants are grown in a garden.

  I learned about weeds before I learned anything about gardens.

For my 40th birthday, my husband built me a beautiful, secure deer fence and I was told to use straw to augment and lighten the heavy clay soil. The straw turned out to be hay and seeded itself heartily throughout the space. I was overwhelmed with weeds that I had inadvertently planted.
