Talking about manners seems sort of redundant and well, obvious. But it’s not as obvious as one would think. I work in an elementary school and I am surprised, almost daily, at the lack of manners.

Many kids do not reciprocate when they are greeted with "good morning!" or "hello." If they even look at you, they don’t miss a beat and continue on their way. I, myself, stop them and remind them that when someone greets you, the polite thing to do is respond back.

January is National Thank You Month, the perfect opportunity to pause and express your gratitude for the gifts you received during the holidays, or a great time to just thank someone who has special meaning in your life.

  While an e-mail or text message is nice and a phone call is fine, nothing conveys heartfelt thanks better than a handwritten note. A handwritten note is a tangible and personal expression of your appreciation. It signifies that you took the time to focus solely on the giver, that you cared enough to express your gratitude.

Have you ever heard someone comment that thoughtfulness seems to be going the way of the dinosaur? Perhaps you’ve had the same thought yourself from time to time. We’ve all experienced an every-man-for-himself attitude at work, given gifts that weren’t acknowledged, walked down streets that seemed full of bad attitudes.

I think that as a society, we might be becoming less considerate to others than we were in the past. However, let me be clear: The problem isn’t that we don’t care or that we’re trying to be rude. We’re simply busier, more stressed, and more overwhelmed than ever before!

In this time of a seemingly-never-ending pandemic, Valentine’s Day is bound to be different for many of us. Those who are couples may miss the traditional dinners-out, romantic get-aways, and other such expressions of their undying affection.

However, what if there was an easy, heartfelt way for all of us to honor Valentine’s Day. A way to express love in a safe, non-COVID threatening way, not just to our sweetheart, but to the many others in our world that we hold dear. It’s putting love into action by simply saying, "Thank you."

Who's the better spouse? Do you do all of the laundry, cooking and dishes? Do you regularly clean up your spouse's mess? Clearly you have the high ground here. Well, not so fast… what's your intent?

For example, your spouse habitually misses the laundry hamper and their dirty clothes litter the area around it. Irritated, you fuss and fume, but you toss their dirty clothes in and now the hamper is over-full and laundry must be done.

After you get married, it’s easy to become so busy with the details of everyday life that you fail to consciously appreciate the people who helped get you to where you are today. If you’re like most people, your parents are foremost on that list. They taught you important lessons, provided for you, sacrificed for you, and made many unforgettable memories with you. So on Father’s Day, be sure to hit the "pause" button on your own family’s activities and pay special attention to the man who raised you.

"A marriage magazine? That will never work. People have tried and the public just doesn’t respond to it. Good luck."

This was the general response when the idea for Hitched magazine was introduced to print media industry professionals back in 2000.

Maybe for us this was a blessing in disguise: It costs a lot of money to start a magazine and the print media market was and is in a major decline. Maybe those "industry professionals" were right. Maybe we should just call it a day and try something else.
