In case you hadn’t noticed, men have a pretty lackadaisical attitude toward their health—an attitude that contributes to the fact that roughly one in four men in the United states will die of heart disease, and a between 70 percent and 89 percent of all sudden cardiac events occur in men! And the situation is getting worse, with women outliving men by about five years.

Sounds pretty grim, doesn’t it? Well, it doesn’t have to be. The reality is that half of all premature deaths are preventable—but to accomplish that, men will have to make some pretty serious changes in the way they run their lives. Unfortunately, far too many men aren’t terribly interested in modifying their behavior.

If you’ve been together for a substantial period of time, there’s a fair chance that at some point you’ll find yourself saying (or at least thinking) these three fateful words: This isn’t working. When that happens, these four even more dreadful words—I want a divorce (or I want out)—are just a hop, skip, and jump away. And all too often, all that’s standing between these two sentences is guidance from a professional. Before you can seek help, though, you’ve got to admit you have a problem.

Throughout history it’s been easy to recognize infidelity, even if you personally haven’t experienced it. If you’ve ever been to the movies or watched a soap opera, you have some idea of what it looks like: the surreptitious glances, the hurried meetings in unoccupied hallways, the quick stripping of the clothes, the sweaty bodies, the quick throwing-on of the clothes followed by the, "Who, me?" look.

When couples wait too long to ask for help, the relationship may be beyond repair. The sooner help is sought, the better chance there is of recovering, saving and actually strengthening the relationship. This includes issues dealing with affairs or other types of betrayal. The longer we wait, the more entrenched we get in destructive patterns and resentment and all hope for change is lost. At a certain point we don’t even want change…we just want to be done.
