About 1/3 of U.S. adolescents are victims of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner, with the highest number being girls, according to a report published by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. As parents, it’s hard to know how to steer our daughters towards healthy guys who will treat them well, but the following are ideas that will help girls attract good guys.

1. Trust your gut. One of an adolescent girl's best protections versus dating violence has to do with trusting their intuition. Girls tell me that when a guy walks into a party, their radar goes off telling them that he either feels safe or that he seems like a creep.

When most parents think about their role in educating their children about sex, they get stuck on "the talk," i.e. the birds and the bees' discussion that is all about mechanics. And this makes even the most hip parent a bit queasy.

Parents today have been inundated with scary stories about teen pregnancy, STD’s, AIDS, and early dalliances with oral sex. Or perhaps worse yet, your own stories from your teen years come back to our consciousness, and we don’t want our kids to suffer through our mistakes or rock with our wild times. So what’s a parent to do?

Who wants to be married? Dying sounds more proactive than being married. The word married, whether used as a noun, verb or adjective sounds past tense and settled. Married comes across as boring and evokes no excitement. Dating, on the other hand, is an action word. Dating sounds like things are happening, you sense a future with endless possibilities and dreams around the corner. Married rolls off the tongue with the thud of dirt clods falling on a casket.

My Own Phase 1

In my own case, when I first got to Seattle in 1986 I had about 3 months before school started. I decided to take the time getting to know the city and also time dating as many women as I could. After my divorce, I couldn’t meet women my age in the college town of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. I tried acting in community theater, and everything else I could think of. Finally, I changed jobs and moved to the University of Washington in Seattle.

A Troubled Marriage and Depression Can Promote Obesity

Researchers from Ohio State University recruited 43 healthy couples, ages 24 to 61, who had been married at least three years and measured how their mood affected metabolism. In a two-day study the couples were given a questionnaire that asked a variety of things, including past mood disorders. The couples were then given high fat meals, which included eggs, turkey sausage, biscuits and gravy. The meals, which ran 930 calories and 60 grams of fat, mimicked that of common fast food meals.
