The Basics of Fighting Fair

Having an argument with your sweetie can ruin your day—or even your week. Wouldn’t you love to learn the art of disagreeing without hurting each other? You can become a master in managing conflict within your marriage by following a few basic steps with dedication. Occasional quarrels are a natural and healthy part of relationships. Differing opinions are not problematic when managed in a positive, respectful manner. A multitude of conscious and unconscious factors play into each couple’s unique conflict management patterns. While good, clean fighting habits can keep lines of communication clear and open, destructive fighting patterns can truly wreak havoc on a relationship over time. When we don’t strive to become more aware and mindful of our habits and patterns, our unconscious behaviors tend to take over and rule our lives.

Fighting Fair: The Rules of Engagement for Love and War

On your wedding day, you probably dreamed of sun-filled years of happiness, laughter and sheer delight. However, conflict in marriage happens, so when the metaphorical "boxing gloves" come on and you’re fighting with your spouse it's important to keep it clean.

Fighting fair is about respecting your spouse, even in moments of disagreement. Arguments are not justifications to be mean, say whatever you want or drudge up the past with your spouse. Fighting fair is about getting your point across, but doing it in a way that’s not hurtful. Here are four steps to help you fight fair and resolve conflict effectively:

Get Over It: It’s Not Fair Syndrome

I remember so clearly sitting next to my dad as we drove through town. I was discussing some injustice I had suffered and he looked directly at me and said, "no one ever said life was fair." I was completely devastated. Later on as my marriage crumbled in spite of my ongoing efforts to hold it together, I could still hear those words echo in my heart. Now as I raise two kids alone, attempt to build a new relationship and to expand my business, I am forced every day to face this inevitable truth. I decided to stop running from the obvious and to accept my dad’s wisdom, albeit with the help of a few sound strategies I’ve learned along the way. Here are 10 ways to get over the "it’s not fair syndrome."

Check Out the Award-Winning Wines at the Los Angeles County Fair

Editor-in-Chief of Touring & Tasting magazine, Wendy van Diver, shares her recent visit to the Fairplex in Pomona, California.

This year, I'm celebrating a very special anniversary! It’s the 75th anniversary of the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, hosted by the fabulous Fairplex, the home of the Los Angeles County Fair. The actual judging by nearly 100 international wine experts of the 3,200-plus wines occurred in late May, and the winners were announced at Cheers: L.A.’s Wine, Spirits, Beer & Food Festival in June. I was just reviewing the roster and it’s amazing how many types of wines are entered from all around the world. There are more than 500 categories from Albariño to Zinfandel, including nonalcoholic wines and Saké!

Wine Tour: South Coast Winery Resort & Spa

A seamless blend of world-class wine, gourmet cuisine, and utter luxury, South Coast Winery Resort & Spa provides guests a sublime experience while they explore Temecula Valley, California wine country.

The only full service winery resort in the Temecula Valley, the 38-acre property began as a vineyard planted by Owner Jim Carter in the 1990s. Jim had a passion for growing plants and he and a team of vineyard experts meticulously tended the rich soil, intent on cultivating superior fruit. The fruits of their labor were first bottled in 2003, and in 2004, the first South Coast Winery wines were entered in competitions.

5 Signs You Don’t Fight Fair in Your Marriage

Conflict and disagreements between couples is a part of life. Two human beings with their own thoughts and free will are bound to get tangled up in conflict occasionally. It’s not so much about the fact that it happens, but how you and your spouse navigate through it.

Fighting in your marriage may be problematic if it rarely ends in finding peaceful resolutions or at least compromise. More damage can be done if one or both feel hurt or angry after the incident has passed, which can mean unfinished business between you. Resentment is toxic to marriages and poor conflict resolution skills can create a mountain of it.
