Let’s be real. Pornography is a problem. It pops up on your computer. It is available on your phone. If you watch TV, it’s almost impossible to escape the stream of images that are borderline pornographic. If your television subscription offers more than the basic channels, it’s likely that you, your spouse, and your children have easy access to pornography on your big screen. In truth, porn might keep your spouse in the bathroom a bit too long. It might interfere with your sex life. It might change the way you view your partner. It might make you think that it’s so much easier to have a relationship with a porn image instead of a real life partner.

The issue around pornography’s influence on sexuality has never been more important to address than it is today, simply because pornography has never been more integrated and relevant in our culture.

Our purpose here is not to assess it from a moral perspective but to ask, "What are porn’s practical implications for relationships?" First of all, we must acknowledge the main reason for using porn—to increase pleasurable sexual stimulation and intensity.  And the fact is, few products deliver on what they promise the way porn does.

My husband and I have been together 11 years. I have offered to watch pornos with him, but he would rather do it without me. Why? Is it me? All he does is lie to me about it and I’ve asked him to be honest with me. I’m not sure how I feel about porn, but I was willing to try and he pushes me away like he doesn’t love me. I don’t know what to do!

Pornography is a common part of the private lives of many couples and individuals and can be a great tool for couples to improve intimacy, if introduced into a relationship correctly.
