For those divorced parents who are ordered to share some type of visitation arrangement over the summer with their child(ren), there are always disruptions and potential issues that arise—ones that need to be dealt with during the back-and-forth transitions. For those children who spend the entire summer vacation with "the other parent" (because, perhaps, one parent lives on the other side of the country) the child(ren’s) return to the primary parent’s residence can be stressful, confusing, and depressing.

When school lets out, most estranged couples find themselves away from his/her child (children) for extended periods of time due to lengthier visitation schedules than what is customary during the school year and the holidays. Many courts suggest parents split the summer in half. That means you can easily be with or away from your child (children) for up to a month or more. That can be a hard adjustment for everyone! Then again, you may find yourself shuttling the children back and forth every two weeks, one week, and in some cases, every few days. This can be unsettling.

It won’t be long until summer, and many are looking forward eagerly to that annual summer vacation. For some, it’s worth waiting for, but for others it’s not worth overspending... and the fact is many Americans do.

An Experian survey found that 68 percent of people overspend on summer vacation, and 35 percent don’t save for it. You want to enjoy a vacation and know you’re not paying for it for years to come.
