How to Make In-Law Visits Better

The last couple of times we have visited my husband's parents in Europe, they were very hard on me. I was visiting them with our babies in tow, who were in diapers and not sleeping at night. Needless to say, I was very tired. Not only did my husband's parents not help me with the children, but complained behind my back that I do not help them with things like dishes and food preparation while I am there. They told my husband I have very bad manners and am inconsiderate. For this reason, I do not feel welcome in their home.

How to Talk Less to Get What You Want

You moan, you groan, you are beyond frustration with your spouse. You just can't get them to accomplish anything you need them to do.

Then there's your child who absolutely refuses to do what they are supposed to do, and you are convinced that there must have been a mix-up at the hospital.

During lunch one day, your girlfriend clucks sympathetically and says, "Life has its frustrations."

How to Be Assertive with Your In-laws

My husband's parents' behavior is creating problems in our marriage. My mother-in-law and father-in-law make rude comments to me in private and in front of my husband. I do not respond to the comments in an effort to be respectful to his parents. When out of their presence, I try to discuss the situation to my husband and try to explain why their comments upset me.

His normal response is, "I didn't hear them say that" or, "Oh, I didn't notice," etc. I get upset with my husband because he is sitting beside me when these situations happen. How can he not hear or notice?

How Positive Language Affects Marriage

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways."

The poetic language of Elizabeth Barrett Browning matched her husband Robert Browning, and they had a long and happy marriage. In contrast, Sylvia Plath’s and Ted Hughes’ styles were not in sync and their relationship ended tragically. A new study from the University of Texas claims that when you are happy, you mimic the speaking and writing style of your beloved. When your styles don’t match, watch out for the downward spiral. Language style matching is automatic unless you do it intentionally for the purpose of manipulation.

How to Approach Spouse & Make Amends After a Big Fight

Any couple that has been in a committed relationship knows that disagreements are bound to happen. Sometimes, small disagreements escalate into big fights. When both parties reach an impasse or exhaust themselves with holding on to their position, a cold war can ensue. Generally, at some point, one party or the other would like to attempt an effort to make amends, but approaching an angry or wounded mate is hard to do.

Over the years I have spoken to dozens of couples who have confided to me that though they felt awkward, uncomfortable and downright uncertain as to how to get the, "I want to make up with you" ball rolling, they were eager to find appropriate ways to do so.

5 Relationship Skills to Teach Your Children: 2. How to Discuss Difficult Subjects—Specifically Money

Money is often a very sore subject for couples to discuss, and it can often lead to fights between you and your spouse. But such behavior doesn’t resolve the financial issues, but instead only adds stress to your relationship with your spouse and provides a poor example for your children, who learn from observing how disputes are resolved in their own family.

These family disputes, mishandled, will set your children up for equally stressed relationships later in life when they need to discuss financial issues with their husband or wife and fall back on the behavior they learned from watching the two of you. This article discusses how you can successfully address and resolve financial issues with your spouse and how you can improve your own relationship while teaching your children a valuable skill.
